The 5th Ave's 2018-19 season also includes both new musicals ("Little Dancer") and stalwarts such as "Annie" and "West Side Story."
The 5th Avenue Theatre’s 2018-19 season includes the launch of the national tour of “Come From Away,” the show that went to Broadway after stagings in Seattle, La Jolla, Washington, D.C., and Toronto.
The musical, which centers on a small town in Newfoundland whose residents scrambled to play host to some 7,000 airline passengers forced to land there on Sept. 11, 2001, was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including best musical, and won one — for best direction of a musical.
Some of the earliest stagings of “Come From Away” took place at the 5th Ave under its New Works Program, according to a news release from the theater that also noted the show went on to sold-out productions at La Jolla Playhouse, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto before opening last year on Broadway, where it is still running.
“Come From Away” will be the first show in the 5th Ave’s 2018-19 season. The full season:
“Come From Away” (Oct. 9-Nov. 4)
“Annie” (Nov. 23-Dec. 30)
“Rock of Ages” (Feb. 1-24, 2019)
“Little Dancer,” a West Coast premiere (March 22-April 14, 2019)
“Urinetown,” a co-production with ACT, at ACT (April 6-June 9, 2019)
“West Side Story” (May 31-June 23, 2019)
“Annie,” “Rock of Ages,” “Little Dancer” and “West Side Story” all feature original 5th Ave. staging.
There will also be a season extra — the national tour of “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” (April 23-28, 2019) — that will be available at a discount to subscribers.
