★★★  The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (PG): Antonio Banderas hams it up as the live-action pirate villain who steals the secret formula for Krabby Patties, the signature “greasy little sandwich” of the SpongeBob world. Time travel is worked into the story, as well as a message about the value of teamwork. And, through it all, SpongeBob remains his sweet and shrieky self. “HA! HA! HA! HAAA!”

★★★  McFarland, USA (PG): The latest Kevin Costner sports drama is based on a true story about an underdog high-school cross-country running team. The cast includes Carlos Pratts, Romero Rodriguez and Costner as the team’s coach.

★½  Focus(R): Will Smith and Margot Robbie play the whole who’s-conning-who game in this film about a career con man who crosses paths with a young woman wanting to learn his trade.

★  “Jupiter Ascending (PG-13): The Wachowski siblings’ sci-fi flick brings together Channing Tatum as a sky-skating super soldier and Mila Kunis as the constantly-in-peril queen of the universe.

Camp X-Ray (R): At the Guantánamo Bay prison in Cuba — depicted here as a living hell — a combative, unlikely and ultimately caring friendship develops between a detainee (Payman Maadi) and an Army private (Kristen Stewart). No star rating provided.
