The holiday season kicks off Friday, with Macy’s Holiday Parade in Seattle and Bellevue Magic Season Snowflake Lane’s music, lights and falling snow in Bellevue.

It’s officially Christmas season Friday, welcomed by the Macy’s Holiday Parade in downtown Seattle at 9 a.m. and Bellevue Magic Season Snowflake Lane’s music, lights and falling snow in downtown Bellevue.

Crowds fill downtown Seattle streets for the Holiday Parade, a local tradition celebrating its 25th year with holiday tunes from marching bands, floats, giant balloons and hundreds of costumed characters, with Santa in his sleigh as the grand finale.

Sunshine is predicted for perfect (chilly) parade weather to see crowd-pleasers including the Seattle Seahawks’ Blitz, Blue Thunder and Sea Gals; the Mariner Moose in his Santa suit riding the Moose Mobile; and local dog clubs with Scottish terriers, sheepdogs, Dalmatians and St. Bernards, many in holiday attire.

Downtown festivities continue at 5 p.m., with lighting of the giant star atop Macy’s, a Seattle tradition for 59 years, accompanied by a fireworks show, weather permitting.

Several downtown streets will close for the parade so allow extra time to find parking or to arrive by bus, monorail, light rail or other transportation. Other downtown Seattle holiday attractions opening Friday for the season include the Holiday Carousel and Winter Village at Westlake Park and Winterfest at Seattle Center. Magic in the Market kicks off the holiday season at Pike Place Market on Saturday, Nov. 28, with holiday music, Santa visits and a 5 p.m. countdown to the lighting of the holiday tree and lights throughout the Market.

Bellevue Magic Season starts Friday with the popular Snowflake Lane of lights, music, fairies, live toy soldiers and magical snow on Bellevue Way Northeast at 7 p.m., followed by Santa lighting the Bellevue Place tree at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Snowflake Lane continues daily through Dec. 24 and returns as Celebration Lane Dec. 26-31.

The outdoor ice arena in Bellevue Downtown Park opens Friday for skating through Jan. 10. Free parking for Snowflake Lane, shopping and other attractions is available at Bellevue Square, Bellevue Place and Lincoln Square and in lots near Bellevue Downtown Park.
