Still tuneful at 90: Dick Van Dyke sings "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" over breakfast at Denny's

If you were among the customers having a peaceful breakfast at a Santa Monica Denny’s a couple of days ago, you got a rare treat: Dick Van Dyke, with his a cappella group (who are named, quite appropriately, The Vantastix), singing a cheery “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” The beloved actor, who starred in the film of that title back in 1968 (playing, as many former kids know, the inventor Caractacus Potts), turned 90 last December and still appears in films, in addition to impromptu performances around town. Rumor has it that he might turn up in the upcoming “Mary Poppins” sequel; I only wish that he’d pop up at a restaurant in my neighborhood.
