Weekend Highlight

Celebrate the start of the fall season, German-style, at Fremont Oktoberfest from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 20-22. It will be a beer lover’s paradise, for those 21 and older only, with more than 100 brews and ciders to try.

Drinks from more than 40 breweries will be available, with everything from IPAs to lagers to sours and more. If you want to go more traditional, try a German bier in a stein or boot.

Tokens are how you’ll get your tastes. Each one is good for a 5-ounce mini-mug pour. Bigger glasses (steins and boots) and refills are also available.

If all that beer is making you hungry, there will be German pretzels, bratwurst and other fair food.

On Sunday only, bring along your dog for Dogtoberfest. Enter your pup in a cover-dog-model contest at 3 p.m. ($10 entry fee); watch dogs soar through obstacle courses with Seattle Fly Dogs; or catch the Seahawks game inside Fremont Studios with your furry friend. Dogs must be on leashes at all times.

Want to pair your beer with some games and activities? You’re in luck! On Saturday, tailgate for, then watch, the UW vs. BYU game at 12:30 p.m. and the WSU vs. UCLA game at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, do it all over again for the Seahawks vs. New Orleans Saints game at 1:25 p.m. All games will be shown on the big screens at Fremont Studios. Don’t forget your spirit gear!

Music fans can head to the DJ Tower where tunes will be spinning all weekend. On Friday and Saturday, DJ Indica Jones will be performing from 8 to 11 p.m. On Saturday, catch DJ Simon Thwaits from noon to 3 p.m. and DJ Jerry Wang from 4 to 7 p.m. On Sunday, DJ Kryspin will take the stage from noon to 3 p.m.

Feeling competitive? Show off your strength at the stein-hoisting competition. If that’s not adventurous enough for you, try your hand at axe throwing with the PNW Axe Throwing Company. Or for something more extreme, watch master carving artists compete in the Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving Contest on Friday at 6 p.m. by the DJ Tower. Watch out for flying pumpkin guts!

For an all-ages activity, participate in the Street Scramble scavenger hunt on Sunday. Your team will receive a specially-prepared map with dozens of checkpoints. Your mission is to find as many as you can before time runs out. You will have 90 minutes to hunt, but maps will be handed out 30 minutes prior to the start time so you can strategize! On-site registration begins at 8:45 a.m. and awards will be handed out at 12:40 p.m. Registration fees for the Street Scramble are as follows: $30 for adults 22 and older, $20 for adults on a team with kids 12 and under; $20 for youth ages 13-21; $5 for children ages 6-12; and free for children 5 and under. A watch and writing utensils are recommended for the hunt.
