Weekend highlight

Summer festivals bring outdoor food and fun to the region this weekend, with the South Lake Union Block Party in Seattle, Taste Edmonds to the north and Kirkland Summerfest on the Eastside.

The South Lake Union Block Party hosts food trucks, a beer garden, live music, local businesses and organizations, and art activities for all ages on Friday, Aug. 10. Festivities start at noon with performances from five Seattle bands from 4 to 11 p.m. The event benefits Plymouth Housing Group’s work to end homelessness. The South Lake Union Line Streetcar is a great way to get to the celebration, with easy connection from Metro or Sound Transit buses, Link Light Rail and the Seattle Monorail.

The 36th annual Taste Edmonds has all the food, music, vendors, rides and fun from years past, plus a new layout and expanded 21+ Garden, Friday through Sunday, Aug. 10-12. There’s Kid Zone bounce houses, entertainment and activities, and covered seating with a stage near the food vendors. The new 21+ Garden includes a stage, games, food trucks, a Beer Tent, Irish Tavern and Wine Tent.

The $3 admission charge benefits Edmonds Chamber of Commerce community activities. Free parking and shuttle-bus service from Edmonds-Woodway High School provide easy access to the festival site.

Kirkland Summerfest offers beer and wine gardens and an arts festival Friday through Sunday, Aug. 10-12. The Main Stage and Beer Garden host live music all three days, including the Dusty 45s, the Black Tones, Nite Wave, Crème Tangerine and more, with a cover charge after 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A street fair with arts, crafts and food vendors fills downtown Kirkland Friday through Sunday, with KidZone rides and activities at Heritage Park Saturday and Sunday.
