Weekend Highlight

The historic spacecraft Columbia, flown by NASA astronauts during the first moon landing, comes to town as the centerpiece of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” opening Saturday, April 13, at the Museum of Flight.

The exhibit, on view through Sept. 2, celebrates opening weekend with special events Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, featuring moon-themed virtual-reality experiences, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter demonstrations and activities, and presentations including a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibit by its Smithsonian curator at 2 p.m. Saturday and a program on the future of the Space Age at 2 p.m. Sunday. Special events are also planned for the 50th-anniversary celebration of the first moon landing in July.

“Destination Moon” is enhanced with the Museum of Flight’s own Space Race displays with rare objects including a Soviet Sputnik satellite, an early cosmonaut spacesuit and the world’s only display of the remains of the rocket engines that boosted Apollo missions to the moon. The exhibit also features augmented reality moon walks and a “Tranquility Base” family playground with a full-scale command module and other spaceflight activities.

Admission to “Destination Moon” is by timed ticket, available in advance, to limit the number of people at a time in the exhibit, and is $10 in addition to museum admission. Museum admission is free from 5 to 8 p.m. the first Thursday of every month, with “Destination Moon” admission still $10.

Spring Fair in Puyallup

Also this weekend, the Washington State Spring Fair opens with all the traditional fair favorites: carnival rides, games, farm animals, entertainment and food. It runs Thursday, April 11, through Sunday, April 14, in Puyallup.

New attractions at the Spring Fair include daily Ninja Experience Stunt Show performances and the Farm at SillyVille, which provides farming experiences for kids and debuted at last summer’s Washington State Fair.
