Weekend Highlight

Honor and remember deceased loved ones in the ancient traditions of Mexico at “Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) — A Mexican Celebration to Remember Our Departed” this weekend, Oct. 27-28, at Seattle Center.

Performances, activities, food and rituals of the holiday celebrate the art and spirituality of Mexican culture and its indigenous roots. The festival honors history, culture and family through remembrance of deceased loved ones and ancestors said to be nearest to the living at this time of year.

People of all ages are welcome to make a decorated sugar skull, see the creation of a tapete sand painting, and explore traditional foods and ofrendas (decorative altars) displays.

Also this weekend, GeekGirlCon comes to the Washington State Convention Center Oct. 27-28. It celebrates all geeks and honors the legacy of women contributing to science and technology, comics, arts, literature, game play, game design and beyond. The event features vendors with collectibles, comics, geek wear, gaming and the DIY Science Zone, with scientists guiding visitors through fun experiments and providing information about their specialties. Cosplay is encouraged for all ages, with costume contests Sunday.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, look out for zombies on the loose at “Thrill the World” events in Seattle and Redmond, part of the annual celebration of people around the world dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

After weeks of practices, the Seattle Thrillers will be at Occidental Park and Thrill the World Redmond will take place at Redmond Town Center; both events are at 3 p.m. Saturday. At Issaquah’s Zombie Walk, practice is at 1:30 p.m. for the Thriller dance at 5 p.m. Saturday at Issaquah City Hall.
