A galaxy far, far away is moving a lot closer to Seattle on Monday.
Seattle’s Code.org, which provides services and games to teach kids to code, is partnering with Disney and Lucasfilm to debut a “Star Wars” coding lesson.
Kids will be able to partner with Princess Leia and Rey, a character from the soon-to-be-released movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” to take on a space mission and build a game. Disney is donating the rights and providing some staff to help develop it.
Code.org is preparing for its third annual Hour of Code campaign Dec. 7-13, which encourages students worldwide to do a one-hour coding tutorial. Code.org has been on a mission to bring coding education to schools across the country and now reaches about 600 high schools across 90 districts, said co-founder Hadi Partovi.

Partovi said he’s thrilled to be partnering with a movie and brand that is historic.
“We want kids to think of computer science as being cool and not just a limited thing for a small number of people,” he said. “Connecting things that they find cool in the real world just drives up the excitement.”
Code is again putting two female characters front and center. Last year, the company teamed up with Anna and Elsa from the wildly popular movie “Frozen.” This is part of Code’s push to get women and minorities involved in the tech community, an industry that is traditionally dominated by white men.
The company said 43 percent of tutorial users are girls, nearly double the 23 percent of computing jobs that are held by women, and 37 percent of Code.org students are African American or Hispanic.
