COMMENT: Fourth-quarter R&D expenses at the Seattle supercomputer maker were up significantly, mainly due to the expiration of a big development contract. Despite last year’s losses, Cray predicted it will turn a profit this year, though profitability will be “weighted heavily toward the second half of the year.”

COMMENT: Despite a pickup in the Seattle company’s business in the fourth quarter, operating expenses grew even faster, leading to a deeper loss. The company projected that adjusted operating income before amortization of intangible assets from acquisitions (its preferred gauge of profitability) will exceed $4.5 million in the current quarter and $21 million for the full year; last year, that measure was just over $24 million, down from $33.4 million in 2006.
