Shaun Sears of Canopy Cat Rescue rescues a cat named Blaze that had been stuck in a tree overnight in Lake Forest Park on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Sears estimates they’ve rescued around 8000 cats since they started 16 years ago, approximately 500-800 cats a year currently. The nonprofit relies solely on donations. “Folks can donate on our website, CanopyCatRescue.com, if they want to support what we do.” says Sears. “A lot of times, in situations like this one, we don’t charge, for a lot of reasons like this, because it’s an unknown cat. Nobody knows whose cat it belongs to. So, if folks want to support what we do they can always donate.” Sears and his rescue partner Tom Otto are both arborists. They rescue cats in areas all over Washington state, “but pretty much predominantly the west side of the mountains. “We’ll climb as high as the tree is tall.” he says. “Sometimes the difficulty will rely in the cat’s receptivity to us, but also the stability of the tree.” Sears says the highest tree they’ve rescued from was 185 feet. Sears says cats fair better on cold dry nights than when its rainy and 50 degrees. Last nights’ temperature dipped down to 23 degrees. A cold weather advisory is in effect until Wednesday, 10am tomorrow morning.
