LO SOCKEYE AT THE LOCKS
061413 You can almost reach out and touch the sockeye at the Ballard Locks fish ladder, they’re so close. Jay Wells, program director of visitor services discuss the return of sockeye salmon to people who gathered. The peak of the run is expected to be the first two weeks of July with a total around 96,000 returning from the Pacific Ocean to fresh water beginning at the locks, then Lake Washington and the Cedar River watershed. The returning salmon are only one out of every 1,000 eggs that make it full circle. Tours begin at the visitor center at 1 pm and 3 pm, Monday through Friday, and at 11a.m., 1 p.m. and 3pm on weekends. The run began two weeks ago.
