‘The fear, the betrayal’: Trial on behalf of Susan Cox Powell’s sons begins in Pierce County

Attorneys made opening statements Tuesday in a case brought by the parents of Susan Cox Powell against the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. The wrongful-death lawsuit against the agency alleges the state didn’t do enough to keep their 7-year-old and 5-year-old grandsons safe from their father, who killed the boys in 2012.

Eagles fly over garbage at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley. About an hour before, Justin Dayton, a wildlife biologist hired by King County to keep birds away, shot into the air to scare them off, Thursday, February 13, 2020. They all came back and descended again on the garbage.

Dayton has a number of strategies to keep birds away from the landfill, including shooting fireworks at them, kites, netting, etc. Since eagles are not very frightened by the noise form the canon, King County is applying for a permit to shoot fireworks at the eagles at the landfill. They already shoot fireworks at the other birds, but need a special permit for the eagles. 212986 212986

Love boat docks in Seattle on Valentine’s Day

This is the highest water inflow event at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks since detailed record keeping began in 1946 according to William Dowell, Public Affairs Officer for the Seattle District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Locks spillway seen here, has had other big water flow events in February 1996 and January 2009, but the 3-day inflow volume from February 7 – 9th appears to be larger than anything else in the database, according to Dowell.
The peak 1-day inflow was between 15,000 to 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). Peak 1-day outflow was 13,500 cfs.

The Chittenden Locks are different than most dams in that there are no downstream concerns. Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River and Mud Mountain Dam on the White River are flood risk reduction dams – they hold back water to reduce flood risk downstream. “At the locks there are no downstream risks, and we were releasing as much water as possible through the spillway,” according to Dowell. 212993
