Interstate-90 at Snoqualmie Pass is closed in both directions this morning due to heavy snowfall. Some 23 inches of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours, a WSDOT spokeswoman said.

The pass is closed between North Bend and Ellensburg while crews do avalanche control work. Transportation officials say there is no official time for reopening.

“It’s closed due to avalanche snow work. It’s on both east and west Snoqualmie Pass,” said WSDOT spokesman Mike Westbay.

Stevens Pass and White Pass remain open.

“People need to make the decision if they really need to cross those mountain passes,” said Alice Fiman, a WSDOT spokeswoman. “People need to know what the conditions are where they’re going…” because conditions there “could be dramatically different.”

About 200 WSDOT trucks are on the roads from the Canadian border to Olympia, she said. All crews are working full 12-hour shifts around the clock as they plow snow and slush and spread sand, salt and chemicals on the roads.
