CHICAGO — O’Hare International Airport is getting some travelers through passport control a little faster thanks to new self-service kiosks.
The airport is the first in the U.S. to get the new technology, which was developed by the Vancouver (B.C.) Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The 32 kiosks at Terminal 5 are currently available only for U.S. passport holders. But officials plan to expand their use.
Arriving passengers scan their passport on the machine, take a photo and use the touchscreen to complete a customs declaration and answer a few questions.

The kiosk spits out a receipt that the traveler then takes to a customs officer, who finalizes the inspection.
The program started in July. Since then, the average wait time during peak hours has fallen by 16 minutes.
