What happened: Washington held its first practice at Husky Stadium. The Huskies will practice at least once every day, except on Sundays, until playing their first game Aug. 30 at Oregon.
Reunited: One surprising addition to the UW roster was former O’Dea High star Chancellor Young, the son of one-time Seahawk Charle Young. Chancellor Young played a year at Duke, then transferred to UW and was on the roster for the 2005 season and the spring of 2006 — catching a 55-yard touchdown pass in the spring game — before being declared academically ineligible. Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham said there were other issues involved, as well, but said Young got them cleared up recently and was welcomed back to the team. He is listed as a senior and figures to help out immediately on special teams with a chance to crack the depth chart at receiver.
Roster shuffle: Willingham said the status of center Juan Garcia, recovering from a severe sprain of his left foot (technically, a Lisfranc injury) is still uncertain despite having recovered better than expected. So the Huskies are making contingency plans at center with guard Ryan Tolar spending most of Monday’s practice working at center behind Matt Sedillo, who was Garcia’s backup last season. Also, true freshman Chris Polk, listed as a slotback but also a running back in high school, appeared to spend all of practice working at tailback. He worked mostly at receiver in the spring.
Quote of the day: “Yes” — Willingham, when asked if he thinks the Huskies will be in a bowl game this season.
