What happened: Second practice at Husky Stadium.
Garcia on the mend: Center Juan Garcia told reporters Tuesday, “I didn’t think I would be this far ahead” in his recovery from a Lisfranc injury (a severe sprain of his left foot) suffered last spring after he took part in the early portion of practice Monday. He said he is holding out hope he could be ready for the season opener, and more realistically thinks he could be ready for the second game against BYU. UW offensive line coach Mike Denbrock, however, described Garcia’s situation as “tenuous” and wouldn’t guess when he may be able to return. In the meantime, guard Ryan Tolar continues to get snaps at center, though Denbrock said Matt Sedillo would be the starting center if UW played a game today.
Ta’amu ailing: UW coach Tyrone Willingham said true freshman defensive lineman Alameda Ta’amu of Rainier Beach will be limited early on in practice while still battling a foot injury suffered in high school. Ta’amu has been expected to potentially play immediately on a young defensive line, but Willingham said his chances will obviously lessen if he can’t practice.
Huskies shaping up: Willingham said the team “ran pretty well” during conditioning tests on Monday and other position coaches have echoed similar words.
