The Washington baseball team is ranked No. 17 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, released yesterday. The publication also named Huskies sophomore pitcher Tim Lincecum a first-team preseason All-American and named junior shortstop Brent Lillibridge to the third team.
The Huskies finished 39-20-1 overall last season and went 15-9 in Pac-10 play to finish second in the conference. UW opens its season Feb. 11 at UC Irvine.
Texas took the top spot in the poll. Three other Pac-10 schools also made the poll: Stanford (No. 6), Arizona (11) and Arizona State (12).
Lincecum was last season’s Pac-10 pitcher and freshman of the year. He went 10-3 with a 3.53 earned-run average and struck out a school-record 161.
* Edean Ihlanfeldt, former Washington women’s golf coach, will be given the Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award by the College Golf Foundation at the National Collegiate Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame Banquet on Jan 12.
The award is given in recognition of outstanding service and unselfish involvement in promoting golf at any level.
Ihlanfeldt started the UW women’s team in 1974 and was the program’s first coach for seven years, refusing to take a paycheck for her services.
* Ashley Anderson, junior forward for the Gonzaga women’s basketball team, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Anderson started the Bulldogs’ first eight games of the season ,averaging 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
