Sorry – “Pacific Blue,” because in 2016, every uniform rollout comes packaged with its own dictionary.
A few of the other bells and whistles included in Seattle’s 2016 uniforms, which will pair with existing all-white away look, per the club statement.
– Pacific Blue is “steeped in Seattle lore. Inspired by the Puget Sound, which helped give the Sounders franchise its name, the blues of the jersey reflects the colors of the sound that finds its home in Seattle.”
– The design weaved into the home greens is “inspired by Mt. Rainier. Inspired by Mt. Rainier, the interlocking ‘S design for Seattle Sounders FC is woven into the fabric of the team, just as the mountains are woven into the very fabric of the Seattle community.”
– The “Sky of Blue, Sea of Green” chant is printed on the jersey’s neck tape, while the City of Seattle crest in the bottom, left-hand corner of the front is an inspired touch.
Initial thoughts? Not wild about the blue sleeves, but that whole alternate look is sharp — it feels very Vancouver Whitecaps but also harkens back to Seattle’s NASL days. And if nothing else, the Sounders managed to clear the very low bar set by Columbus for 2016 MLS jersey combinations.
The Sounders will also be hosting a public event rolling out the new jerseys on Friday at 6 p.m. at the CenturyLink Field Pro Shop.
Here are a couple of closer looks, featuring the nice touch that is the City of Seattle seal in the bottom corner of the tops:
