The Seattle Sounders announced Wednesday their new pair of play-by-play announcers: Keith Costigan and Matt Johnson, who will voice the regional television and radio broadcasts, respectively.

Costigan, a native of Dublin, Ireland, currently covers the German Bundesliga and Europa League for Fox Sports. He has also called MLS games on Univision’s English-language broadcast and was on site for the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. Costigan’s playing career included a stint down the road with the USL Portland Timbers.

Costigan, who will be paired by former Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller in the booth, will retain his roles with Fox and Univision and commute from Los Angeles to Seattle for home games.

“Anytime I can be (in Seattle) for a longer spell, I will do that,” Costigan said in a phone interview. “I can guarantee to anybody listening that there will be no better prepared broadcaster in the league. … The fact that I’m a national broadcaster is a win-win for the club.”

This week, save 90% on digital access.

Johnson re-joins the Sounders broadcast team after serving as a pregame, halftime and post-game radio host from 2009-2014. A Seattle native, Johnson spent the past 11 seasons as the Executive Producer of the Seahawks Radio Network. Johnson is also, he helpfully points out, an active participant in the Greater Seattle Soccer League.

Johnson does not have previous play-by-play experience, but he says “that’s really what excites me the most.”

“What a challenge and what an opportunity,” Johnson said. “… Instead of thinking it’s daunting or overwhelming, I think it’s more exhilarating than anything else.”

The club also confirmed its intention to continue its partnership with Q13 FOX and JOEtv for its 20 regional broadcasts in 2016. ROOT Sports will continue carrying out-of-market games, KIRO 97.3 FM remains the English-language carrier for Sounders games and El Rey 1360 is the Spanish-language option.

This upcoming season will mark the first time in club history with separate TV and radio broadcasts, having previously used a simulcast.
