Watson watches prospects
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson was at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, even though he is playing this week on the other side of the country in a Champions Tour event. It is typical for captains to make appearances on the PGA Tour throughout the year to meet with media and keep an eye on potential players.
At 64, Watson is the oldest U.S. Ryder Cup captain in history. Some might be concerned he is out of touch with today’s best players.
Ten of the top 15 players in the U.S. standings have not played in a Ryder Cup. That includes 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, who was born two months before Watson was captain of the last American team to win in Europe.
“It was good to sit down at breakfast and see some of the old faces, like Davis Love and David Toms, but see some of the young faces, as well,” Watson said. “Had the opportunity to go down to the practice range and watch some of these guys try to hit it over that fence, which they have raised 30 feet up there.”
There are about six months to go before nine players earn a spot on the team, and three weeks after that before Watson has to announce his three captain’s picks. The Ryder Cup starts Sept. 26 at Gleneagles in Scotland.
Watson said Raymond Floyd, 71, will be one of his assistants; he previously has said Andy North, 63, would be an assistant.
