Joshua Mayers’ MLS power rankings
Rankings will run Wednesdays during the regular season
Team (prev. rank) Comment
Columbus Crew (1) Is Guillermo Barros Schelotto the best in MLS? Great start with a goal and assist in the opener.
Real Salt Lake (2) Defending champs (2-11-2 on the road last year) get high marks for a 3-0 win at San Jose.
Sounders FC (4) Did what they should have. Handled an expansion team (Philadelphia) at home 2-0.
L.A. Galaxy (5) Edson Buddle, who scored L.A.’s goal, could be the key this season. Not Landon Donovan.
Colorado Rapids (10) Not many better ways to start the year than with an road win. Rapids had just two in 2009.
Houston Dynamo (6) Former Washington Husky Mike Chabala scored his first career goal Saturday against Dallas.
N.Y. Red Bulls (12) Opened the season and a brand-new stadium with a win at home. Can they do it on the road?
K.C. Wizards (14) No one foresaw a 4-0 win. Even better for Wizards fans, it came against ex-coach Curt Onalfo.
Chicago Fire (3) A near miss on Brian McBride’s bicycle kick nearly ruined the grand opening in New York.
Toronto FC (7) Could do worse than lose on the road to Columbus. Keep an eye on forward O’Brian White.
N.E. Revolution (8) Didn’t have do-everything M Shalrie Joseph in opening loss to L.A. Semi-acceptable excuse.
Chivas USA (11) A 1-0 home loss to Colorado was not the ideal debut for first-year coach Martin Vasquez.
FC Dallas (13) The Hoops had the most disappointing home opener in the league, with barely 8K fans.
Philadel. Union (15) Weren’t completely dreadful in loss on the road in Seattle. Weren’t that good either.
D.C. United (9) Embarrassing four-goal loss to Kansas City revealed some major flaws for the proud franchise.
San Jose ‘Quakes (16) Losing 3-0 at home a fitting debut for the worst team in the league. Nervous, Frank Yallop?
