Joshua Mayers’ MLS power rankings
Rankings will run Wednesdays during the regular season
Team (prev. rank) Comment
1. Real Salt Lake (1) Got a win with a less-than-full-strength lineup despite a shocking error by GK Kyle Reynish.
2. N.Y. Red Bulls (2) The winning streak ends at five, but a six-game unbeaten string doesn’t sound bad either.
3. D.C. United (5) Vaulted into first place in the East by one point, but has played two more games than N.Y.
4. Sporting K.C. (6) Had a “Don’t forget about us!” message in beating San Jose to end a four-game winless streak.
5. San Jose (4) After more midweek drama from Alan Gordon, the magic ran out in K.C. on the weekend.
6. Sounders FC (3) No wins in its last four MLS games, but the arrival of the Open Cup could be a needed spark.
7. Houston (7) Good week for Andre Hainault: He made his 100th MLS start and scored a winning goal, too.
8. Vancouver (8) Nine games in 28 days is a brutal haul, but they’ll be disappointed to lose the ACC to Toronto.
9. Columbus (12) The week’s big riser with wins vs. Seattle and Chicago. Unbeaten streak is at five (3-0-2).
10. Colorado (10) Overcame a red card to beat expansion Montreal, 3-2, with a late goal by Jaime Castrillon.
11. Chicago (9) Got a gift in Pappa’s controversial winner vs. Dallas, but dropped points later in Columbus.
12. Chivas USA (11) Offense is starting to click, but the defense gave up two more leads in ties vs. N.Y., Seattle.
13. Portland (14) Kris Boyd ended his scoring drought, but the defense coughed up the lead to rival Vancouver.
14. New England (13) Few teams have such a wide gap between home form (3-1-1) and road form (1-6).
15. Montreal (15) Made an exciting DP signing in Marco Di Vaio, but he won’t be eligible for a few weeks.
16. L.A. Galaxy (16) The nightmare continues. Even if the reigning champs get hot, is it going to be too late?
17. FC Dallas (17) Which loss hurt more? One on a goal that shouldn’t count or one that came in stoppage time?
18. Toronto FC (19) Not a bad week, for once: Won the Canadian championship and earned its first MLS win.
19. Philadelphia (18) Have earned one point in five games, and one of those losses came to previously winless TFC.
