LONDON — American Clint Dempsey scored his first goal for Tottenham, giving the Spurs a 3-2 English Premier League victory over Manchester United on Saturday — their first victory at Old Trafford in 23 years.
On a day of 29 goals — the most in a day in the English top flight since February — five came in the United-Spurs match, with Dempsey scoring the winner in the 52nd minute.
“It was a roller coaster, up and down,” said Dempsey, a former Fulham standout who helped Tottenham earn its third straight victory. “We found ourselves 2-0 up and then in the second half, it seemed we were chasing shadows … But we ground out a result and showed a lot of character.”
Chelsea stayed on top of the league, beating Arsenal 2-1 to open a three-point lead over Everton.
