Skiers and snowboarders have plenty of holiday weekend options, and another storm is expected to bring more snow to the Cascades by Sunday.

An arctic air mass is moving south from Canada, and rain is expected to turn to heavy snowfall in the mountains. The freezing level will drop to 2,000 feet by Sunday, and extreme cold weather is predicted to hang around next week.

The timing is good news, as snow coverage had started to become rather thin at a few ski areas that opened last week. Others like The Summit at Snoqualmie and White Pass are hopeful this arctic blast will allow them to begin winter operations soon.

“The snow is holding up well, and we’ve been really lucky with our conditions by doing some strategic grooming,” said Gwyn Howat, the Mount Baker Ski Area operations manager. “We’re anticipating 12 to 24 inches of snow from this upcoming storm if it hits us just right.”
