Take some newsprint, a healthy dose of sequins, glitter glue and creativity, and you get Deb Nielsen’s grand-prize-winning entry in The Seattle Times/Bartell Drugs fan flags contest.
Nielsen, a Redmond scrapbooker and busy volunteer, consulted with her two teenage daughters as she embellished her banner. Look closely, and you’ll see cutouts of players, mini jerseys, tiny sports articles, beads, ribbons, stars, lights … “I just kept adding and adding,” she said. She said her prize, a $500 Bartell Drugs gift card, will especially come in handy for printing photos.
Seattle architect Roger Newell’s entry, called “Seahawk Rising,” earned a $250 Bartell card. Newell said he first thought of the banner as a dragon tail, then saw it as a kite tail, with a Seahawk head standing in for the kite. He said he’ll assemble some wings for it “after I learn how to build a bird kite.” For now, his creation is hanging in his office reception area.
Ten randomly selected entries have won $100 gift cards from Bartell Drugs or local restaurants. The winners are: Stacy Parks, Duvall; Linda Iwanyk, Mercer Island; Josepeh Piek, Puyallup; Sienna Sowatsky, Port Ludlow; Richard Roark, Lynnwood; Olivia George, Bellevue; Leah Gladstein, Seattle; Herbert Gabales, University Place; Jeri Kaufman, Burlington and Barb Streck, Lake Forest Park.
