Although the Seahawks’ four prime-time games is an impressive total, it isn’t the most in the league. The Patriots, 49ers and Broncos are each scheduled to play in prime time five times. The Steelers, Packers, Falcons and Redskins join the Seahawks as teams playing in four prime-time games this season.
The Seahawks join the 49ers, Bears, Falcons, Redskins, Dolphins and Chargers as teams with two appearances on “Monday Night Football.”
The teeth of the Seahawks’ schedule comes in bunches. Seattle plays San Francisco at home and at Houston and at Indianapolis in a four-game stretch starting Sept. 15. If the Seahawks are able to go 3-1 in that stretch, they’ll be in great shape. All three of those teams made the playoffs a year ago.
The Seahawks then play the Saints at home on “Monday Night Football” on Dec. 2 and follow that with tough road games against San Francisco and the New York Giants. The release for the Seahawks: They end the year with Arizona and St. Louis, not gimmes but certainly not the toughest games on the schedule.
The Seahawks could play in more prime-time games later in the season with the NFL’s flexible scheduling. The NFL allows games to be moved into prime time between weeks 11 and 17, and the Seahawks have two potentially appetizing games: at San Francisco on Dec. 8 and at the New York Giants on Dec. 15. Both could move into prime time depending on their significance and interest level. The NFL must announce changes to its schedule at least 12 days in advance.
The Seahawks have come a long way in terms of national profile under general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll. In 2010, the Seahawks played in just one prime-time game. In 2011, they played in two. Last year, they played in three. And before Carroll and Schneider arrived in Seattle? The Seahawks didn’t play in a prime-time game in 2009 after playing in just one in 2008.
