RENTON — The quality of cornerback Richard Sherman’s tackling was so obvious in Sunday’s wild-card victory at Minnesota that coach Pete Carroll noted it to his entire team.

Of all the things Sherman has been associated with over the years, tackling usually has not been high on the list. But this year he has made it a priority.

Sherman made six tackles against the Vikings and was particularly effective in limiting Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Sherman always has been an above-average tackler, per data from Pro Football Focus, and is again this season.

“I think it’s been a huge part of my game,” Sherman said. “It’s just about being complete. After a while, you stop competing with other people and start competing with yourself, start competing with history and just seeing how good you can get, how perfect you can play.”

Sherman said this season that he had a better understanding of the run game, and added that not being a willing tackler on this defense would be a “Cardinal sin.”

There was one play in particular Sunday that stood out. The Vikings handed the ball to Peterson, and Sherman came flying in off the edge. But right before they made contact, Peterson bounced the run outside, and Sherman lost leverage.

It looked like Peterson might pick up a solid gain, or at least get around Sherman on the edge. But Sherman stayed step for step with Peterson, fought off a stiff-arm and shoved him out of bounds for a 3-yard gain. It was a great recovery to limit the damage.

“He has really been a consistent, hard-ball corner from the time he got here,” Carroll said. “And it’s really cool that he demonstrates that, because there’s some understanding that corners don’t have to tackle, don’t have to hit. That’s not what Richard Sherman is. He’s a legitimate part of our run (defense). We count on him. He’s been consistent for years. We’re very lucky to have that. He’s a real asset to us there.”
