Reign FC has a new home: Seattle’s Memorial Stadium.
The local National Women’s Soccer League team announced Thursday that it has agreed to a multiyear deal with Seattle Public Schools to move its home games to the historic Seattle Center venue and away from Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.
As part of the agreement, believed to be through 2015, Memorial Stadium’s locker rooms will be renovated, among other improvements.
The Reign, which will also practice at the stadium, joins a rich history of soccer teams to have played there, including multiple incarnations of the Sounders (North American Soccer League, A-League and United Soccer Leagues).

“We have found a place to call home in the heart of downtown Seattle, and we couldn’t be happier about that,” said Laura Harvey, coach and general manager, in a news release.
For soccer purists concerned with the quality of the playing surface, new artificial turf was installed in July. As a comparison, Sounders FC is going into Year 3 on the current installation of FieldTurf at CenturyLink Field.
In other notes, football lines on the field for the high-school season will be painted green until the fall. Capacity at the 12,000-seat venue will be limited to 6,000, with fans grouped on just one end.
No alcohol will be served, due to Seattle Public Schools policy, but the Reign has partnered with food-truck vendors for in-stadium concessions and plans to work with nearby bars for pregame events.
“This move exemplifies our desire to continuously improve our club on and off the field,” said owner Bill Predmore in the release. “We are thrilled to call Memorial Stadium home.”

The NWSL schedule will be released at 8 a.m. Friday.
Memorial Stadium was built in 1947 and dedicated to Seattle students who died in World War II. The stadium’s namesake will be honored throughout the NWSL season with an on-site presence (e.g. signs, public-address announcements) for the Army National Guard and the opportunity for a Military Night.
Said Seattle Public Schools athletic director Eric McCurdy: “We look forward to a long partnership.”
