An 83rd-minute goal by Diana Matheson gave the Washington Spirit a 1-0 win over Reign FC as the Spirit claimed the season series between the two teams at the bottom of the league standings.

Seattle (5-13-3) outshot the Spirit 14-8, but couldn’t put one in the net in at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. It was the second game between the Reign and the Spirit (3-14-4) to be broadcast on Fox Soccer.

It was the second win in a row for the Spirit, which received a new coach in Mark Parsons on July 1. Matheson, the Canadian international, tallied her eighth goal of the year.

Reign goalkeeper Hope Solo made three saves as Seattle suffered its third loss in a row.

The Reign concludes its inaugural season Aug. 17 against the Portland Thorns at Starfire Stadium at 5 p.m. Portland is in a three-way tie for second place in the league and battling for seeding in the four-team postseason.
