5 Mylast Sweet Pea G Mitchell 5/2 121
3 Articulate E Kubinova 10 121
4 Seadrifter F Valdez 9/2 121

Red Ran Back was third of eight in her only race, last June, and has been working out well for her return. Tsarina Haven has been competitive in six tries at Golden Gate in Northern California for trainer Frank Lucarelli, who had three winners from seven starters in the opening week at Emerald. Mylast Sweet Pea doesn’t have much early speed, but she will be rallying late.

Its Guiness Times has the most experience in the field (four are making their first career start) and has been working out well. Tactical Strike wasn’t great in two starts last year, but his trainer, Charles Essex, usually has his horses ready after long layoffs. Sthenios is making his career debut for trainer Blaine Wright, who does well here year after year.

3 5 furlongs, purse $6,725, 3-year-old, maiden claiming $7,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
2 The Bainster I Enriquez 7/5 122
4 Wedgey Time J Gutierrez 3 122
3 Debauch L Camacho-Flores 8 122
1 Private Ride R Richard 7/2 122
5 Regazze Cat P Fernandez 10 122
6 Onetimeforolmark J Zunino 8 122

The Bainster drops in class after racing OK at Golden Gate, and trainer Lucarelli and jockey Isaias Enriquez were a good combination last year. Wedgey Time has been working out well for his career debut for trainer Jim Penney, a Washington Racing Hall of Famer. Debauch didn’t do much in two starts on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate but is trained by Tim McCanna, the all-time leading trainer at Emerald.

4 5 furlongs, purse $5,400, 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, claiming $2,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Seattle Game P Fernandez 7/5 123
5 Montelena R Richard 4 123
1 Kilauea J Whitaker 12 123
2 Cookies and Milk L Camacho-Flores 12 123
4 Redseasalt R Bowen 9/2 123
6 Its Diva Time J Zunino 5/2 123

Seattle Game has won 12 times in 27 starts at Emerald, and while she is on the decline at age 8, she is good enough to beat this group. Montelena isn’t the most consistent horse these days, but can be tough if she’s ready after a long layoff. Kilauea didn’t have a great winter at Portland Meadows, but she has been in the money in 10 of 13 starts at Emerald.

5 51/2 furlongs, purse $5,400, 3-year-olds and up, WCL $2,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
1 Jerry’s Fever R Bowen 7/5 124
6 Mr. Top Kat L Camacho-Flores 7/2 124
3 Sharp Focus J Gutierrez 9/2 124
2 Master’s Bluff R Camacho 8 124
4 Secret Element E Kubinova 12 124
5 Royal Shrine J Matias 10 124
7 Sharper Knight R Richard 6 124

Jerry’s Fever is coming off a win in March at Turf Paradise in Phoenix and it’s hard to go against trainer Jeff Metz, who had a remarkable seven wins and three second-place finishes from 11 starters on opening weekend at Emerald. Mr. Top Kat is an all-or-nothing horse with five wins in 18 starts with no second- or third-place finishes, and he is a threat to win today as he could get an easy early lead. Sharp Focus has raced at this level twice, winning each time.

6 51/2 furlongs, purse $5,300, 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, claiming $2,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
5 Opening Buzz F Valdez 5/2 121
3 La Pearla I Enriquez 2 119
4 Brats Brat L Camacho-Flores 5 119
1 B B’s Quick Action E Kubinova 3 119
2 Goin Out Tonite R Richard 10 119
6 Sixteen Reasons P Fernandez 6 119

Opening Buzz was ready last year in her first race at Emerald after a long layoff, winning impressively. La Pearla has been racing against better at Golden Gate. Brats Brat can fill out the trifecta for trainer Don Munger, the 90-year-old who fought on Iwo Jima in World War II.

7 51/2 furlongs, purse $7,450, 3-year-olds and up, WCL $7,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Songandabullet L Mawing 3 121
2 Attempt R Bowen 5/2 124
6 Popular Pick J Gutierrez 3 121
1 Stormin Parker G Mitchell 12 115
4 Mister Breeze R Richard 8 115
5 Expenses Paid E Kubinova 5 121
7 Last Defense F Valdez 15 115

SCRATCHED: Air Grinder.

Songandabullet returns from Golden Gate to Emerald, where he has had all of his success. Attempt looked great beating a weak maiden group last week at Emerald. Popular Pick has been in the money in 11 of 14 starts but seems to lack the will to win with just one victory.

8 51/2 furlongs, purse $14,375, 3-year-olds and up, claiming $25,000/$22,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Belt R Bowen 7/5 121
1 Follow My Tracks J Gutierrez 6/5 121
2 Bound to Win R Richard 12 121
4 Dogleg Left L Mawing 9/2 118
5 Direct Cost J Whitaker 8 118

Belt showed good promise last year for trainer Tom Wenzel, who has his horses ready coming off long layoffs. Follow My Tracks will also get a lot of support as the top two picks seem to stand out from the rest of the field. Bound to Win seems the best of the rest.

9 51/2 furlongs, purse $5,500, 3-year-olds and up, maiden claiming $5,000
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
4 Kowboy Doc L Mawing 3 118
3 Cowboy Cocktail R Bowen 5/2 124
1 Nacho Macho J Rosales 7/2 118
2 Mister Messenger F Valdez 9/2 124
5 Three Bales Left L Camacho-Flores 8 124
6 Something Magic A Rosales 8 124
7 Dr. Ryan’s Gold L Gonzalez 15 118

This is an extremely weak field, and it’s tough to endorse any of them. Kowboy Doc had a rough beginning in his only career start, in January at Golden Gate, and maybe he can improve a lot with a better start. Cowboy Cocktail has had slow workouts in preparation for his career debut, but he has a solid trainer and jockey (Chris Stenslie and Rocco Bowen). Nacho Macho beat a total of one horse in two races last year, but still looks better than the rest.
