MILAN, Italy — Five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Ohno of Seattle returned to international competition Friday and won the 1,500 meters at the World Short Track Speedskating Championships.
Song Kyung-taek of South Korea crossed the finish line first in the 1,500 final, but was disqualified for blocking a passing attempt by Ohno near the end of the race. Ohno’s winning time was 2 minutes, 33.793 seconds.
Ohno, 24, won the gold medal in the 500 meters at last year’s Turin Olympics and earned gold in the 1,500 in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. He won gold medals in the 1,000 and 3,000 at the 2005 worlds in Beijing.
Ohno took time off after the Turin Games and resurfaced at this year’s U.S. championships. He earned his eighth national title in the event in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, that ended Feb. 25. Ohno ranked first in every category at nationals.

Nicola Rodigari of Italy was second Friday in 2:33.841, and Olympic champion Ahn Hyun-soo of South Korea was third at 3:22.818. Olivier Jean of Canada also was disqualified from the final.
South Koreans swept the medals in the women’s 1,500.
Jung Eun-ju won in 2:22.303, Olympic champion Jin Sun-yu placed second in 2:22.381 and Byun Chun-sa finished third with a time of 2:22.520.
Allison Baver, a Colorado Springs, Colo., resident who is Ohno’s girlfriend, was fifth in 2:24.303.
The 500-meter finals are today. The event concludes Sunday, with finals in the 1,000, 3,000 and two relays.
