TORONTO Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors was placed on the injured list with a strained left Achilles tendon yesterday and will miss at least five games.
Carter was hurt in the first minute of the second half in Toronto’s 90-86 overtime loss at Detroit on Wednesday.
“It’s just something that’s been bothering me for three years,” Carter said. “I want to let it settle down and get better instead of having it nag me.”
Carter was driving along the baseline Wednesday before pulling up and then falling to the floor. He was helped to the locker room and didn’t return, then limped to the team bus after the game.
A prolonged injury could hurt the Raptors’ chances of trading the five-time All-Star. Carter has asked to be dealt, and the Raptors have held trade discussions with a number of teams in recent weeks.
Carter said he doesn’t want to risk a serious injury by continuing to play.
Magic’s Hill sits
OAKLAND, Calif. Grant Hill missed a game for the first time this season, a precautionary move because of a badly bruised right shin.
“I’ll be back,” Hill said before the Magic beat the Golden State Warriors. “I won’t be out long.”
The 32-year-old Hill was sidelined all last season recovering from four surgeries on his left ankle, which were followed by a staph infection that hospitalized him for a week and forced him onto intravenous antibiotics for six months.
Hill plans to play tomorrow against the Lakers in Los Angeles.
Also, the Magic activated forward Pat Garrity and placed forward Brandon Hunter on the IL with a hyperextended right elbow.
F Glenn Robinson might sit out the entire season because of an ankle injury, Philadelphia 76ers coach Jim O’Brien said.
Robinson has been on the IL all season with left-ankle tendinitis and a sore elbow.
“I don’t anticipate seeing him at all,” O’Brien said. “He said he is incapable of playing. My understanding is that his ankles are incapable of carrying him on the court.”
Detroit Pistons Fs Rasheed Wallace (sore right hamstring) and Antonio McDyess (left-calf strain) sat out last night.
Denver C Marcus Camby is day to day with a bruised tailbone.
C Jake Voskuhl underwent an emergency appendectomy and was placed on the IL by the Phoenix Suns. The Suns activated rookie G Yuta Tabuse.
Utah C Jarron Collins left in the third quarter with a sprained right knee and did not return.
New Jersey C Alonzo Mourning sat out with hand, hip and knee aches. He also intends to sit out today’s game.
