SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Forget about “Win one for the Gipper.” Notre Dame’s goal against Oregon State at the Insight Bowl tonight in Phoenix is “Win one for Coach Ty.”
“I really want to do this for Coach because I want to show everybody what kind of team he has,” senior linebacker Derek Curry said Sunday. “I really want to win it for him. His spirit lives on within us.”
The Fighting Irish (6-5) are aware that if they had won more for Willingham over the past three seasons, when they went 21-15, they wouldn’t be faced with trying to honor him with a post-firing victory.
Washington hired Willingham.
The Fighting Irish view beating Oregon State (6-5) as their last chance as a team to show respect for Willingham, whom many players view as a second father.
Notre Dame hired Charlie Weis, offensive coordinator for the NFL New England Patriots, as its new head coach earlier this month.
* Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has agreed in principle to a new seven-year contract worth $16 million.
* Mack Brown, coach of Rose Bowl-bound Texas, is in line for a raise. His existing salary exceeds $2 million a year. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said details of the new contract will be announced during the week.
* Junior running back Hakim Hill‘s troubled career at Arizona State ended when he was sent home from El Paso, Texas, and dismissed by coach Dirk Koetter.
Hill, the team’s leading rusher, was booted from the squad for violating a team rule, a spokesman said.
