Willie Bloomquist

16 | Willie Bloomquist, infielder/outfielder

Age: 29. HT: 5-11. WT: 195.

Bats: Right. Throws: Right.

Mariners need … Bloomquist to keep all his gloves handy. His greatest value is his ability to play anywhere, as he did last season, when he played seven positions. Bloomquist would like to be an everyday player, but, barring an injury or two, that’s not going to happen any time soon. He did hit well this spring, 26 for 58 (.448), before the team broke camp.

Ben Broussard

23 | Ben Broussard, 1B/outfielder

Age: 30. HT: 6-2. WT: 220.

Bats: Left. Throws: Left.

Mariners need … Broussard to be an effective pinch-hitter and fill in in the outfield occasionally. There won’t be a lot of playing time for Broussard at first base, with Richie Sexson there. If Jose Vidro has trouble staying healthy — he has fought injuries the past two seasons — or hitting, Broussard could get some at-bats as the team’s designated hitter.

Jamie Burke

55 | Jamie Burke, catcher

Age: 35. Ht: 6-0. Wt: 211.

Bats: Right. Throws: Right.

Mariners need … for Burke to start about 30 games this season, in relief of Kenji Johjima. Burke, who played for Texas’ Class AAA team last season, beat out Rene Rivera with a solid spring. Burke, a former kicker for the Oregon State University football team, has been in pro ball since 1993, and has played 73 games in the major leagues.

Rey Ordonez

10 | Rey Ordonez, infielder

Age: 36. Ht: 5-9. Wt: 160.

Bats: Right. Throws: Right.

Mariners need … the slick-fielding Ordonez to be able to fill in at second base and shortstop, behind Jose Lopez and Yuniesky Betancourt. Ordonez, who is not a strong hitter and hasn’t played in the majors since 2004, was a surprise to make the 25-man roster. He earned a spot on the roster with solid defensive play this spring.
