SPOKANE — Branden Troock scored a hat trick as the Seattle Thunderbirds blasted the Spokane Chiefs 7-3 Friday night in Western Hockey League action.

Justin Hickman had two goals for Seattle (17-9-1-3) and Shea Theodore had four assists.

The Thunderbirds broke open a 1-1 game in the second period with three unanswered goals.

Roberts Lipsbergs and Jerret Smith also had goals for Seattle.

Silvertips fall

KELOWNA, B.C. — Ryan Olsen scored two goals as the Kelowna Rockets beat the Everett Silvertips 3-1.

Carson Stadnyk scored the only goal for Everett (20-6-4-0).

Everett is at Kamloops on Saturday night.

Men’s basketball

Ryan McIntosh and Michael Russo combined for 42 points as host Northwest University upset No. 20 College of Idaho 83-77 to open Cascade Conference play.

In addition to McIntosh’s 20 and Russo’s 22, Northwest U (9-2) got 14 points from Nemanja Grujicic and 10 points from Michael Greene.

Demetrius Perkins led the College of Idaho (9-4) with 19 points.

Women’s basketball

Senior center Laura Hughes scored a career-high 21 points as host Eastern Washington beat Cal State Northridge 73-53 in a nonconference game. Guard Hayley Hodgins added 15 points for the Eagles (1-5) and guard Lexie Nelson had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Jordan Asher hit a three-pointer to break an overtime tie, fueling a Northwest University 9-0 run to close the game, as the host Eagles (6-3, 1-0) beat College of Idaho 91-82 in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams. Sanda Milovic led the Eagles with 20 points. Chanara Greene had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Women’s soccer

Washington State senior forward Micaela Castain was named to the NSCAA All-America second team. The Castro Valley, Calif., native is the first Cougar in the program’s 25 seasons to be named to an NSCAA All-America team.

Castain finished the regular season as the Pac-12 leader or co-leader in goals (11), assists (11) and points (33). She was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, another first for the Cougars program.

• Western Washington forward Kristin Maris was named to the NSCAA All-America second team for Division II. Maris, the team captain, helped the Vikings to their best season in program history, finishing 20-2-1 and reaching the Final Four.

Maris finished the season with 11 goals, three of them game winners, and assisted on eight others. She tied for eighth among WWU career leaders in goals with 28 and tied for sixth in assists with 19.
