SPSL 3A team capsules
Auburn Mountainview Lions
Coach: Jared Gervais (1st year)
2010: 4-6 overall, 1-4 league
Returning starters (9 offense, 8 defense): OL/DE Willy Mack, Sr.; OL/DL David Fowler, Sr.; OL/LB Derek Sarrett, Sr.; OL/RB/LB Dalton Keene, Sr.; WR/DB Skyler White, Sr.; RB/DB Victor Korchemniy, Sr.; QB Domenic Rockey, Jr.; OL/DE Nick Aumua, Jr.; WR Devin Bryant, Jr.; DB Cramer Helton, Sr.
Other key returners: LB E.J. Barracoso, Sr.; WR/DB Elliot Pelfrey, Jr.; WR/DB Ray Hardaway, So.; WR/K Joe Cassano, So.; OL/DL Kijana Dyer, Jr.; WR/DB Davontae Depew, Sr.
Impact newcomers: WR/DB J.J. Lacey, Jr.; OL/DL Dakota Weir, So.
Outlook: Gervais, nephew of former prep coach Steve Gervais, becomes the Lions’ third head coach in three years, but was an assistant on the staff last season. He sees plenty of potential in this group, which features a variety of playmakers, especially at receiver. Rockey is coming off a 1,000-yard passing season and could thrive in the spread offense. This is a team that could compete for one of the league’s three playoff spots.
Bonney Lake Panthers
Location: Bonney Lake
Coach: Chad Barrett (3rd year)
2010: 7-3, 4-1
Returning starters (6 offense, 5 defense): QB Chris Brown, Jr.; OL/DL Taylor Mack, Sr.; OL/DL Jake Nash, Jr.; OL/DL Neko Reynon, Jr.; WR/DB Zach Zaragosa, Jr.; WR/DB Kaleb Zahnow, Jr.; RB/LB Joe Surber, Sr.; WR/LB Dalton Fisher, Sr.
Other key returners: RB/LB E.J. Harris, Jr.; WR/DB Lucas Bright, Sr.; WR/DB Tyler Hernandez, Sr.; WR/DB Isaac Ortiz, Sr.; LB Hunter Coughlin, Sr.; LB Jordan Odea, Sr.
Impact newcomers: WR/DB Keenan Jackson, So.; WR/DB Robert Combs, So.; OL/DL Robert Graham, So.; OL/DL/K/P Cameran Goenner, So.
Outlook: The Panthers enjoyed a successful campaign last season despite their youth — and they’re still young. Brown set the league passing record last year with 2,316 yards (mind you, the league only started in 2006) and continues to impress. Without record-setting receiver Austin Marshall, the offense should be more spread around. Keep an eye on Jackson. Consistency will be a key to a return to the playoffs.
Location: Federal Way
Coach: Leon Hatch (5th year)
2010: 1-9, 0-5
Returning starters (9 offense, 7 defense): FB/LB Connor Schilling, Sr.; RB/CB Yohiness Jennings, Sr.; OL/DL Amante Bell, Sr.; OL/DL Sam Burns, Sr.; WR/DB Michael Klavuhn, Sr.; WR/QB/DB Jason Wiley, Sr.; QB/DB Abraham Ferrell-Logan, Jr.; OL/LB James Bagley, Jr.; OL/DL Kyle Gleed, Jr.; RB/DB Kevin Young, Jr.
Other key returners: RB/DB Ramere Rollins, Jr.; WR Drew Thompson, Sr.
Impact newcomers: OL/LB Meilo Tauala, Jr.; RB/DB Nick Karis, Jr.; DB Isaiah Diggs, Fr.
Outlook: The Gators, who dropped to 3A last season, struggled on both sides of the ball and never seemed to recover from losing QB Ferrell-Logan early on. Wiley is the incumbent now, but both could get some snaps. The O-line should be a strength and there’s depth at the skill positions, particularly running back, where speed is a plus. Must cut down on turnovers to crawl out of the league basement and avoid an eighth straight losing season.
Coach: Don Bartel (4th year)
2010: 3-6, 2-3
Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): QB/DB Tyler Carlson, Sr.; WR/LB Grant Bryson, Jr.; OL/DL Tyler Wicklund, Sr.; WR/DB Stephen Carlino, Sr.; OL/LB Ryan Chynoweth, Sr.; RB/LB Kolton Carlson, Sr.
Other key returners: TE/LB Timothy Dion, Sr.; OL/DL Spencer Wilson, Sr.; WR/DB/K Matt Wasisco, Sr.
Impact newcomers: RB/DB Cameron Strecker, So.; QB/DB Peter Norby, So.; OL/DL Chandler Streuli, So.
Outlook: After just missing the playoffs last season, the Hornets hope to make enough big plays to get over the hump and will play on a home field with new artificial turf. The athletic Carlson, who has a baseball scholarship to WSU, moves to QB and will lead an inexperienced team. Chynoweth leads a defense that will be tested. The nonleague schedule is tough again, but should be good preparation for league play.
Location: Lakewood (suburban Tacoma)
Coach: Dave Miller (11th year) 104-13
2010: 11-2, 5-0
Returning starters (10 offense, 9 defense): QB/WR/DB Cedric Dozier, Sr.; OL/DL Zach Banner, Sr.; OL/DB Zaheer Webb, Sr.; OL/LB Chris Harman, Sr.; WR/DB Ma’ne Manaea, Sr.; RB Levonte Littlejohn, Sr.; QB/TE David Wood, Sr.; WR Marquin Russell, Jr.; WR Sammie Long, Jr.; WR/DB Quinton Parker, Sr.; LB Dre Milton, Jr.; LB Kevin Thompson, Jr.; LB J.J. Njoku, Sr.; DB Keegan Love, Sr.; OL/DE Winslow Kovassi, Sr.
Other key returners: K Bo Wittig, Sr.; OL Neri Hibbler, Sr.
Impact newcomers: LB Charles Hall, Sr.; WR/DB Bryce Dillard, Sr.; RB/LB Penoy Penilton; FB/LB Leon Jenkins, Sr.; TE/DE Benning Potoa’e, Fr.
Outlook: Loaded with talent and experience, the Lancers are heavy favorites to win their fourth straight SPSL 3A title and challenge for a state championship. Banning, Dozier, Littlejohn and Manaea are all marquee players and there’s little drop-off from there. Dozier may play some receiver with Wood at QB, which gives Lakes even more options. Potoa’e, brother of UW’s Sione, is heralded as the school’s next big thing.
Location: Gig Harbor
Coach: Ross Filkins (17th year)
2010: 5-5, 3-2
Returning starters (8 offense, 8 defense): RB/LB Danny Welstad, Sr.; OL/DL Kyle Morgan, Sr.; OL/DL Johnny Andrews, Sr.; RB Jake Peterson, Sr.; OL/DL Joey Queenin, Sr.; WR/LB Luke Plummer, Sr.; TE/LB Kyle Self, Jr.; WR/DB Alex Weymiller, Jr.; OL/DL Robert Gallucci, Jr.; LB Austin Wheat, Jr.
Other key returners: QB Austin Filkins, Jr.; OL/DL Daniel Portillo, Jr.; OL/LB Tyler Brown, Jr.
Impact newcomers: DL Peerscen Paulo, Sr.; WR/DB Kory Vanderstaay, Jr.
Outlook: After a bad-luck 2010 season riddled with injuries, the seasoned Seahawks appear to have one of their better teams. They are strong and athletic, particularly on the line and Filkins says they are better and deeper at every position than last year. Austin Filkins, his son, has literally grown up in the program and has the tools to be a great QB. With Lakes all but untouchable, Peninsula may wind up battling Bonney Lake for second.
