LACEY – Ryan Rogers scored 17 points, including the final four in a 73-69 upset for Saint Martin’s over the 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific men’s basketball team on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Marcus Pavilion.

Brendan Carroll’s three-point play on a layup and free throw drew SPU even at 69-69 with 1:14 left to play. The Saints retook the lead on a basket in the lane by Rogers with 58 seconds left.

David Downs missed a potential tying three-pointer from the left corner for the Falcons with 13 seconds left, and Rogers secured the victory with two free throws with 9.5 seconds showing.

The Falcons (11-4) fell to 2-2 in GNAC play with their second straight setback. They lost 74-70 on Thursday at Western Oregon.

Saint Martin’s (5-7) evened its league mark at 2-2 while halting an eight-game losing streak against SPU.

Other men’s basketball

For the second straight year, Western Washington lost at Alaska-Fairbanks as the Nanooks prevailed 65-61 in a GNAC men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Patty Center on the UAF campus.

The No. 15 Vikings fell to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC.

They were led by senior center Austin Bragg with 21 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs.

Women’s basketball

All-America guard Bobbi Knudsen scored a career-high 37 points as host Montana State-Billings defeated Western Washington, 82-69, in a GNAC game.

WWU, which was coming off an 84-77 upset of nationally No.9-ranked Seattle Pacific, fell to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in GNAC play.

The Vikings got a team-high 18 points from guard Katie Collard. Taylor Peacocke, a freshman from Inglemoor High, contributed 15 points and Tia Briggs had 14.

MSUB improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

Katie Benson pumped in 25 points for Seattle Pacific, but visiting Simon Fraser wiped out a 12-point second-half deficit and hung on to beat the ninth-ranked Falcons, 63-60, in a GNAC game.

The Falcons (8-4, 1-3 GNAC) dropped their third straight.

Simon Fraser was led by the GNAC’s third-leading scorer, Erin Chambers, who had 15 points.

• Evergreen State College defeated host Northwest U, 69-61, in a Cascade Conference game. Northwest U was led by Jordan Asher’s 16 points.

• Eastern Washington defeated visiting Idaho State, 67-55, in a Big Sky contest.
