Matt Marrese, Sammamish boys golf

Marrese was magnificent both days of the Class 2A state tournament at Chambers Bay in Tacoma and won the championship by 11 strokes. The junior fired a 7-under-par 65 in the opening round and followed with a 68. That was 25 strokes better than he shot in finishing 10th the year before. “Matt has led our team through his play, but also his willingness to help others and meet each day with a positive attitude,” coach Ian Duncan said.

Michelle Lui, Forest Ridge girls tennis

And then there’s Lui, who capped a perfect prep career by sweeping her fourth consecutive 1A-2B-1B state title, leading her school to its first team championship. She never lost a set, let alone a match, throughout her four years. “Michelle has not only been an incredible individual performer, but an amazing attribute to the overall team’s success,” assistant coach Loren Lo said.
