The win came three days after Beach beat Garfield, the reigning class 3A state champs ranked eighth in the nation.

Beach (16-4, 14-1) fell behind early to Seattle Prep, 32-11, and couldn’t close the gap despite a furious comeback attempt. Sam Cunliffe led the Vikings with 32 points.

“The atmosphere was great. Standing-room only,” coach Mike Kelly said. “It was the type of game where the walls are sweating.”

Seattle Prep (12-8, 10-5) made ball control a priority in the first half, figuring the best way to keep Rainier Beach off the board was to keep the ball out of their hands.

Welp finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Nick Lynch added 13 points with seven rebounds.

Rainier Beach outscored Seattle Prep 52-38 in the second half.
