SPANAWAY — For opposing coaches of the Enumclaw High School fastpitch team, it would be easy to call them just a squad built on pitching and defense.

And they would be dead wrong.

Senior catcher Becky Forza fueled a five-running first inning with a three-run home run as the Hornets showed they had plenty of pop at the plate by hammering Mountain View of Vancouver 10-3 on Sunday in the championship game of the West Central 3A District tournament at Sprinker Fields.

“In that game, the scouting report to those guys [at Mountain View] was that we don’t hit very well,” said Enumclaw coach Mike Eckhart, whose team pounded out 20 hits in the semifinal and title games with 14 coming against the Thunder. “They were going, ‘They don’t hit very well. They just play good defense.’ I told the kids that beforehand.”

Junior outfielder Tammy Wilkening, known as a left-handed slap hitter, went 4 for 4 with a solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning.

“Everyone can hit on the team, and there’s no one you can pitch around,” Forza said after going 2 for 4 with her three runs batted in. “You try to pitch around one person, you’ve got some person behind them hitting a double or something.”

Sophomore ace pitcher Quinn Breidenbach was in typical dominant form, winning all three of her district starts. She scattered six hits and struck out seven batters in the title contest after mowing down 13 batters in a 4-1 win over Prairie of Vancouver in the semifinals.

Breidenbach, 19-0 and hitting .570, finished district play with 32 strikeouts. Breidenbach drove in three runs in the championship game.

“I love working with Quinn, and she’s just incredible and untouchable,” Forza said. “I have no doubt we can make it all the way to the [state] championship game.”

The triumph gave Enumclaw (25-0) its second consecutive district title and pushed them into the favorites’ role next Friday and Saturday in Class 3A state at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. The Hornets open against Holy Names on Friday at noon.
