PHOENIX — Reserve Robert Hicks scored a career-high 30 points last night as the Central Washington men’s basketball team beat Grand Canyon 97-80 last night at Antelope Gymnasium.


The Wildcats (2-4) shot 55 percent (36 of 66) from the field and 59 percent (10 of 17) on three-point attempts to snap a four-game losing streak.


Lance Den Boer added 19 points for CWU, Kyle Boast had 17 points and Chris Bannish had 15.


Noe Alonzo led GCU (6-5) with 24 points.




At Boise State 78, E. Washington 67


Jason Ellis scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, and Jermaine Blackburn added 17 points to lead the Broncos (5-3) past the Eagles (2-6).


Coby Karl added 15 points and Eric Lane had 10 points as the Broncos sent Eastern Washington to its fourth straight loss.


Jake Beitinger led Eastern Washington with 18 points, and Marc Axton had 16 points and seven assists for the Eagles.


Axton became the 14th Eastern Washington player to surpass the 1,000-point mark when he hit a basket with 9:37 remaining in the first half.


Football


The Cougars have received an oral commitment from a well-regarded high-school defensive tackle from San Diego.


Fevaea’i Ahmu, 6 feet, 290 pounds, has a four-star rating from Rivals.com. That is the highest rating of anyone in the 10-member recruiting class so far. He starred at Serra High School, and Arizona and Colorado were among the other schools recruiting him.


Tennis


• The Washington women’s team was selected to compete in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 3-6 on the Wisconsin campus in Madison. The tournament is considered a preview of May’s NCAA championship.


• The Washington State women announced its latest addition: Aleksandra Stefanova, the top-ranked singles player in Macedonia.

• US Sailing named Susan Kaseler of Bainbridge Island its volunteer coach of the year. Kaseler earned the honor primarily for her work as coach of the Bainbridge High School sailing team.


Tyler Neely, Whitworth senior offensive lineman, was named to the Football Gazette NCAA Division III All-West Region team. Junior kicker Cameron Collings made the second team.
