Michael Almonte and Michael Butler earned co-medalist honors at the West qualifier of the Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship on Thursday at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton.

Almonte of Fircrest and Butler of Sammamish each shot 2-under-par 70 on the 7,013-yard course to lead 48 competitors who advance from this qualifier to the championship, which will be Aug, 5-7 at Wine Valley in Walla Walla.

Roberts comes to Seattle from the University of Oregon, where he spent the season on the Ducks’ pitching coach.

At Oregon, Roberts helped the Ducks to a 56-9-1 overall record, a 20-3-1 Pac-12 mark and the conference title.

“I’m very excited to add Mike Roberts to our coaching staff,” UW coach Heather Tarr said. “He has proven he can develop pitchers of multiple styles. The players he’s worked with continue to get better. He’s very easy to get along with, and our players will enjoy the natural way he connects.”

• Eastern Washington sophomore Paula Gil-Echevarria ran a personal best 10 minutes, 17.17 seconds in the steeplechase to qualify for Saturday’s finals at the IAAF World Junior Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
