This time Chiney Ogwumike wasn’t smiling.

It took grueling work to drag top-seeded Stanford to a 61-47 win against fourth-seeded Colorado in a Pac-12 women’s basketball semifinal matchup Saturday. The All-American finished with 25 points and 19 rebounds.

Stanford (30-2) advances to the championship game Sunday against third-seed UCLA at 5 p.m. at KeyArena. The game will be aired on ESPN2.

“It was forced smiles,” Ogwumike said of the physical defense she faced that led to her shooting 9 of 24 from the field. “Clearly the ball didn’t go in the basket as much as we like. That a was physical game and you just had to stay with things. That was a big test.”

Tied at 36 after a three-pointer by Colorado guard Chucky Jeffery (19 points), Stanford went on a 9-0 run, redshirt junior Mikaela Ruef scoring a smooth layin to make the score 45-36.

Colorado coach Linda Lappe immediately called a timeout and the Buffaloes (25-6) got a bucket out of the break. But Ogwumike was just getting started in revving the engine of her team.

She picked off a dribble for a fast break and hit another with 7:46 remaining to give the Cardinal a 51-40 lead. Ruef then found open holes and joined Ogwumike in scoring late. She finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

“They made it very tough to get the ball inside and when Chiney got it, they made it very tough for her,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “They had bodies on her, arms on her and they subbed in waves so they weren’t worrying about anybody fouling out.”
