ELLENSBURG — Central Washington scored three defensive touchdowns in a span of 63 seconds, and the Wildcats chalked up a school-record 55 points in the opening half on the way to a 61-33 victory over Western Oregon yesterday at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Wildcats improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the victory. Western Oregon fell to 2-6, 0-4.

Central took advantage of numerous Western Oregon turnovers early. Holding a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, the Wildcats posted an 11-play, 90-yard drive capped by Mike Reilly’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Nate Brookreson 56 seconds into the second quarter.

The Wildcats then stymied the Wolves’ next three possessions with takeaways. Brandon Kennedy had a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown on the next possession, followed by a 12-yard fumble return for touchdown by Josh Chance. Kennedy then picked off another pass, this time from 30 yards out, and ran it back for his second touchdown of the game to cap the Wildcats’ 27-point flurry in 1 minute, 3 seconds.

A third scoring pass from Reilly to Brookreson followed at the 5:01 mark, and the Wildcats took a 55-21 lead into halftime.

Reilly threw for a career-high 341 yards and became the all-time leading passer among freshman quarterbacks in school history. He completed 27 of 41 passes for five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Brookreson and Brian Potucek were again his favorite targets, grabbing nine and seven catches, respectively. Potucek had a game-high 120 yards receiving, while Brookreson had 117. Will Bennett led the Wildcats’ rushing attack with 75 yards on 11 carries.

Tight end Kevin Boss led Western Oregon with 100 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Western Washington 28, Humboldt State 24

ARCATA, Calif. — Running back Duncan Sherrard from Roosevelt High scored on a 2-yard run with 8:47 left as Western Washington rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit and defeated Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.

The Vikings (4-4, 3-1), who rushed for 308 yards, the most since 1999 posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

Humboldt State (4-4, 1-3) suffered its third consecutive loss. Quarterback Blake Moorman passed for 321 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns for the Lumberjacks.

Humboldt State reached the Western 8 before being stopped on fourth-and-eight, and crossed midfield twice in the last five minutes, but had each series ended on interceptions, the final one by Western safety Todd McClellan with just three seconds left.

“It was one of the wilder games I’ve been a part of,” said Western coach Rob Smith. “The bottom line is we got the win, we responded to the challenges that came our way.”

Linfield 62, Puget Sound 7

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Brett Elliott passed for 364 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to an easy Northwest Conference victory at Maxwell Field.

Linfield (6-0, 3-0 NWC), ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, won its 22nd consecutive league game and 18th straight contest overall.

Elliott threw touchdown passes to four different receivers, including two each to Casey Allen and Brad McKechnie. Allen had four catches for 89 yards and equaled the Linfield school record with his 176th career reception.

UPS (3-4, 1-3) entered the game leading the NWC in rushing average, but never found its gear offensively. The Loggers were limited to 96 yards rushing and 162 yards of total offense. Tailback Rory Lee, the NWC’s leading rusher, was held to a season-low 68 yards on 19 carries.

UPS scored its only points with 3:25 left in the first half on Eddie Behringer’s 9-yard touchdown catch from Andy Carlson.

Whitworth 48, Menlo 10

SPOKANE — Whitworth took control of the game by halftime, then cruised to an easy victory over visiting Menlo College in a nonconference contest in the Pine Bowl.

The Pirates (4-2), thanks to four second-quarter touchdowns, led 35-3 at halftime. In addition, Whitworth had a 342-160 halftime edge in total offense over the Oaks (0-7), who will become affiliate NWC members in football in 2006.

Quarterback Joel Clark completed 11 of 16 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Michael Allan caught five passes for 156 yards and two scores, including an 85-yard touchdown right before halftime. Whitworth also ran for 203 yards, led by Chris Ahsing (15 for 79), who scored two TDs.

Pacific Lutheran 28, Southern Oregon 17

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Lutes scored on four consecutive first-half drives to put down Southern Oregon (0-7) at Hillsboro Stadium.

The Raiders stormed to a 7-0 lead just 2:49 into the contest on Boomer Marshall’s 42-yard strike to Gabe Hatchett. But SOU’s next two drives ended with an interception and a fumble. The Lutes (2-4) cashed in on both turnovers for eventual touchdowns.Compiled from team reports.
