Akron (7-5) vs. Memphis (6-5)

Time/site/TV: 1 p.m. today, Detroit, ESPN.

Surface: Artificial.

Line: Memphis by 4-½.

Payout per team: $750,000.

Bowl records: Memphis 2-1, Akron first appearance in Division I-A postseason.

Series: First meeting.

Analysis: Mid-American Conference champion Akron’s major bowl debut and Memphis TB DeAngelo Williams’ swan song give fans plenty to watch at Ford Field. Williams, who owns nearly every Memphis rushing record, gained 1,726 yards on the ground this season despite a succession of QB injuries that made him more of a focus for defenses. Akron has enough offensive weapons to keep pace if all the parts are working. QB Luke Getsy’s hookup with WR Domenik Hixon for the winning points in the MAC title game will be etched in Zips lore, but it will be up to RB Brett Biggs to control the clock and provide a counterpunch for Williams. Tigers LBs Tim Goodwell and Carlton Baker must contain Biggs. In case the game is close at the end, it’s worth noting Memphis K Stephen Gostkowski has made 19 of 22 field-goal attempts and is 9 for 9 from 40 yards or longer.

Extra point: A victory would give Akron its winningest season since the 1985 team, then playing in Division I-AA, also won eight.
