Analysis: Conference USA runner-up Central Florida and the Western Athletic co-champion Wolf Pack get together in one of the more intriguing early bowls. The Golden Knights won five of their last six, and Nevada is on a 7-1 run. Chris Ault coaches the Wolf Pack. From the 2000 through 2003 seasons, Chris Tormey was 16-31 as Nevada’s coach. Tormey is Washington’s linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.
Extra point: Central Florida, then featuring QB Daunte Culpepper, lost a provisional 1998 Oahu Bowl spot when Miami (Fla.) upset UCLA. UCLA’s loss caused a ripple effect in the Pac-10 bowl hierarchy. Washington, in its last game with Jim Lambright as coach, lost to Air Force 45-25 in the ’98 Oahu Bowl.
