Gonzaga Bulldogs

Coach: Kelly Graves, 6th year.

2004-05: 28-4 overall, 14-0 West Coast Conference. Advanced to the second round of the NIT.

Star player: Anne Bailey, a senior forward from Snohomish High School, was GU’s top reserve last season. Now, says Graves, “She’s the front-runner for conference player of the year. She’s a matchup nightmare with her combination of size, strength and quickness.”

Impact newcomers: Jami Bjorklund, a freshman guard from Spokane’s University High School, could become a starter this season. Sarah Schramm, a redshirt freshman forward from Chelan High School, led the Bulldogs with 12 points in their first exhibition game.

Bottom line: The Bulldogs lost three four-year starters, including their top two scorers from a year ago. Their replacements have experience in the program (three juniors and one senior among the starting five), but collectively don’t have much game experience.

Quotable: “Good point-guard play is going to determine how successful we’ll be. We’re really solid everywhere else.” — Kelly Graves.
