CHENEY — Eastern Washington scored on four consecutive possessions in the first half on the way to beating UC Davis 24-7 in a nonconference game Saturday. But the best news of the day for the Eagles came before the game ended.

Montana State beat host Montana, giving the Eagles a share of the Big Sky Conference title with the Grizzlies and Bobcats and the league’s automatic berth in the Division I-AA playoffs, which begin on Nov. 26. The Eagles won the berth by virtue of a season sweep of Montana and Montana State.

It was the second straight Big Sky title for the Eagles (7-4, 5-2), who found out the outcome of the MSU-UM game in the second quarter, then rested many of their starters in the second half.

“It feels good to be back-to-back Big Sky champs — it’s never happened before at this university,” said coach Paul Wulff.

Eastern quarterback Erik Meyer left the game in the second quarter after completing 11 of 19 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 67-yard run on his only carry of the game that set up an Eagles score.

Receiver Eric Kimble also left the game before halftime with five catches for 61 yards and his 44th career touchdown, which moved him into second on the I-AA all-time list behind Jerry Rice (50).

Eastern punted on its first possession, then scored TDs on drives of 45, 80 and 78 yards and kicked a field goal.
