CHENEY — Erik Meyer hit Raul Vijil for two third-quarter touchdown passes Saturday as Eastern Washington, ranked No. 21 in Division I-AA, kept alive its Big Sky Conference title hopes by beating No. 11 Montana State 35-14.

Trailing 7-0 early in the second quarter, EWU (5-2, 6-4) answered with 35 straight points to put away MSU (4-2, 6-4).

The game featured two of I-AA’s top quarterbacks, Meyer and MSU’s Travis Lulay, but EWU’s defense made the difference, forcing two turnovers and applying constant pressure on the Bobcats quarterback.

Lulay completed just 1 of 7 for 7 yards to start the game and finished 25 of 50 for 237 yards. Meyer finished 13 of 22 for 206 yards before leaving late in the third quarter with a mild concussion.

Before the injury, he hit Vijil on scoring passes of 17 and 6 yards to give the Eagles a 28-7 lead. Meyer also had 48 yards rushing.

The game was a defensive struggle early on, with MSU sacking Meyer four times in a scoreless first quarter.

To win the title and the conference’s automatic berth in the I-AA playoffs, EWU would need first-place Montana to lose next week at MSU.
